Adam Johnson is preparing for life in prison this morning after a jury found him guilty of sexually touching a schoolgirl Sunderland fan he groomed online.
Judge Jonathan Rose left the disgraced footballer in little doubt about the punishment that awaits him when he returns to court in two weeks’ time to be sentenced for grooming and two counts of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
The judge told him: ‘You must understand that when you return here at the end of March you will receive a substantial prison sentence.’
Adam Johnson shook his head in the dock yesterday and gasps went up from the public gallery as he was found guilty of one charge and cleared on another.
Johnson’s ex-girlfriend Stacey Flounders, who backed him during the trial, showed no emotion as the verdicts were returned after the jury spent more than nine hours deliberating.
Justifying giving him bail yesterday, the judge said: ‘You can say goodbye to your daughter. A prison sentence will mean you will not see her for some time.’
The England winger had already admitted grooming the girl and kissing her as they sat in the front seats of his black Range Rover Sport on January 30 last year. He denied the ‘passionate kiss’ led to anything further.
