A former University of Virginia football player has been arrested and charged following a months-long investigation into an alleged sexual assault case.
Jahmal Edrine, a former wide receiver for the Virginia Cavaliers football, was taken into custody after a grand jury indicted him on one count of rape and one count of abduction, according to authorities.
Officials said the investigation began on August 25, 2025, after a victim reported being sexually assaulted the previous day. Law enforcement continued gathering evidence before presenting the case to a grand jury, which returned indictments in early February.
Edrine, 22, is currently being held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail as the case moves forward through the court system. Authorities have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing.
Court records show the charges stem from two separate criminal counts, with legal proceedings expected to determine the outcome. Additional filings in the case include motions related to bond and confidentiality, though details surrounding those requests have not been fully disclosed.
The University of Virginia confirmed it is aware of the situation and stated that Edrine is no longer enrolled at the school. University officials noted they are limited in what they can share due to federal student privacy laws but will cooperate with law enforcement as the case proceeds.
